The Fossils video is in two parts.
- The first half (approx. 28 minutes) centers on the conditions necessary for fossilization and describes some of the more common methods by which fossilization happens.
- The second half (in the Bonus Feature section, approx. 23 minutes) showcases fossil diversity (think of it as a mini-museum tour) and discusses Index Fossils.
Fossils is rough around the edges and presents like a lecture - which is what it is (Fossils was recorded during the pandemic using zoom); it does not present like a well-rehearsed, polished, made-for-television piece. We will eventually redo the video (and it will be more engaging - more active showing, less discussing photos), but that won't be for some time.
NOTE: In the Fossils video, there is an error in the section about Compression Fossils. The explanation of how, in this type of fossil, organic material is transformed into a carbon film that leaves an impression on the rock, uses an incorrect term: the actual term used should be carbon imprint (not impression). The term impression should not be used here because it is too easy to confuse with impression fossils (as in "cast and impression fossils" - which are completely different from carbon imprints). We apologize for the error.
