Welcome to New Assistant Director: Jessica Davis

Greetings to all!  My name is Jessica Davis, and I'm the new Assistant Director of CEES.  As a native Hoosier, I'm incredibly excited for the opportunity to get involved in ecological research, education, and outreach in my hometown of Indianapolis.  A little bit of background about me: I have my BS in Biology from Marian University, and I recently graduated from the University of Dayton with my MS in Biology (Ecology concentration) in the lab of Dr. Ryan McEwan this past summer.  My academic interests include ecology, sustainability, environmental policy, increasing science literacy of the general populous, and restoration of the human-nature relationship.  As a part of my continuing professional development here at CEES, I will also be pursuing an MPA in Urban Sustainability at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) at IUPUI.

Field work from my graduate work at the University of Dayton.

In addition to my academic background, I bring an array of educational outreach experiences to CEES.  I previously worked as the program manager and a research associate for the Institute for Green and Sustainable Science (IGSS) at Marian University where I taught the ecology of sustainability and mentored undergraduate research in ecology.  It was this position that solidified my interest in working in the academy and pursuing a career that entailed a three-pronged approach to ecology: education, outreach, and research.  Additionally, as an undergraduate student, I worked as a zookeeper at the Indianapolis Zoo in the former Encounters exhibit, which included quite a bit of educational outreach to all ages.

My (much younger) self as a keeper at the Indianapolis Zoo.

In my down time, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and dog - Darwin, exploring the local Indianapolis scene, sending the volley cheer on high for Notre Dame, and learning new skills (golf is the latest endeavor).  I'm settling in nicely here at CEES, partly thanks to the phenomenal staff; they are all incredibly passionate about what they do, and that alone makes my job easier.  I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone in the CEES community.  If you ever have ideas or would like to chat about CEES and our mission, please do not hesitate to contact me.  My contact information is listed at the bottom of the page.

                                                                      Darwin - the fur kid.
