CEES Presents Poster at Joseph Taylor Symposium

The Center for Earth and Environmental Science’s Robert Lugg presented a poster, “Translating Research Into Action Through Environmental Stewardship in Central Indiana Communities” at the 24th annual Joseph Taylor Symposium last Wednesday.  The Symposium was presented by the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI in conjunction with the Department of Philosophy and Center for Service and Learning. While presenting, Lugg worked to connect CEES’ work in research, education, and service with the conference’s themes of “working together for a common good, facing problems as a community, and through mutual support and respect forging more lasting solutions, ensures that none of us must bear societal burdens alone.” Lugg spoke with conference attendees about the ways in which CEES has brought applied environmental research to empower local citizens and businesses, and how CEES’ educational outreach develops environmental stewards for the present and the future. Lugg focused on recent research done in water quality and fluvial erosion hazards, as well as highlighted accomplishments from educational outreach done this past fall through service learning and Discovering the Science of the Environment. Finally, Lugg touched on CEES’ philosophy of forming partnerships within IUPUI, the central Indiana community, and the global community to accomplish common goals that benefit local citizens and the world.
