Amur Honeysuckle: Why We Care

Many CEES service learning events are centered around the removal of invasive species. One species we remove particularly often is Amur Honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii).

New Partnership: Marian University Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab

CEES is excited for our first-time service learning partnership with the Nina Mason Pulliam (NMP) EcoLab at Marian University for environmental service learning events.  The NMP EcoLab is a 55-acre, restored, natural area on the campus of Marian University. 

School of Science Students Participate in Education Outreach

USDA Funds Research On Drought and Water Quality in Indiana

CEES research affiliate, Dr. Pierre-Andre Jacinthe (Associate Professor, Earth Sciences, IUPUI), recently received funding as lead-PI from the USDA to examine the impact of drought on water quality in Indiana.

CEES Visits Area High Schools

I had the fantastic opportunity to visit four area high schools in November and December and speak to over 335 students about a variety of environmental topics, including wildlife conservation, fossils as evidence for human evolution, and astrobiology.

Windshield Tour of Westside of Indianapolis

           On Friday, December 5th CEES assistant director Jessica Davis and I, went on a windshield tour of the Westside of Indianapolis with the goal of scouting out possible CEES service learning projects for next semester. The Westside of Indianapolis is made up of four neighborhoods: Haughville, We Care, Stringtown, and Hawthorne.

Service Learning at Sodalis Park

On Saturday, November 1st, IUPUI students rolled out of bed to start their weekend serving their community. The service learning activity took place at Sodalis Park, a 210 acre woodland forest home to roughly 150 Indiana bats, the species Myotis sodalis. At dusk, the Indiana bat leaves its roost to search for food.

Science & Education Majors Gaining Invaluable Experience

Many are familiar with the Discovering the Science of the Environment (DSE) mobile technology trailer that has been bringing educational programming to 4th through 9th grade students in central Indiana for several years.

CEES Intern Blog

It has been nearly three weeks since I became a part of the CEES Service Learning Program and I am gaining a better understanding of my duties as an intern.  Much of the past three weeks has been spent getting to know my colleagues, performing professional development tasks, and beginning to evaluate some details of past service learning events.
