Environmental Service Learning
Please read this page completely.
Logistics:
The
Center for Earth and Environmental Science (CEES) offers multiple
service learning projects each semester.
Please review the scheduled dates and times listed to the right.
Utilize the links to learn more about each project including associated
activities, background, images, maps and driving directions.
Participation in the
entire day’s project is required to receive full credit.
Registration:
Projects are frequently done
in environmentally sensitive areas, therefore participation is limited.
Participants are accepted on a first come basis so you must sign up in
advance - projects do fill. To register, use the Project Registration
link to
the left on this web page to reserve your place—each project is listed
individually. Please register for only one project even if you are in
multiple classes that offer this option. You will receive an
automatically generated web confirmation screen listing your
registration information after you submit. Please print this page
as a record. You will also receive an email the
week of the project detailing time, date and location of the project
(which is also listed on each of the project web pages). Click on
the Project Registration Confirmation tab on the left to view a partial
listing of your registration information.
As
part of your registration process, please complete the Pre Project
Survey located on the link to your left.

Registration Cancellation:
Please only register once online. Please notify CEES via email
cees@iupui.edu
to change or cancel registration information or if you are taking G199
and need to register for three projects. If you must cancel,
please notify CEES in advance of the project via email so that the
service learning staff can register you in an open project if desired.
You will lose your place in service learning if you do not show up for
the project and do not notify CEES in advance to reschedule.
Statement of Working Conditions:
Projects are conducted in the
out-of-doors within natural areas of central Indiana. Project partners
include Indy Parks and Recreation, Indiana Department of Natural
Resources, Central Indiana Land Trust, Hamilton County Parks and Recreation,
Noblesville Parks and Recreation, the City of Indianapolis, Veolia Water
Indianapolis, the Indiana School for the Blind, and IUPUI Campus Facility
Services. Project activities differ for each project location but will
include data collection, removing invasive exotic plant species,
installing native plants, mulching, trash and recycling removal, and
hillslope stabilization / erosion control. Project activities
are similar to moderate to heavy yard work. For example,
participants will carry and stack branches / trash bags, walk through
woods, carry and plant small trees. Participants must dress
appropriately and wear long pants and closed toe shoes. Equipment,
gloves, and drinking water are provided for the work days. Lunch is
provided for those work days that extend to five hours.
Bottled Water Statement:
We do provide bottled water at each service project for the health and
safety of our participants and recycle all bottles used. However,
to help reduce our environmental footprint and reduce the cost of
program supplies, we ask participants to bring their own 1 L reusable
bottle filled with water.
Scheduled Rain Dates:
Participants must be available for both the project date and
scheduled rain date.
All projects are subject to change with weather conditions. If
weather conditions are unfavorable for a service learning project, the
cancellation notice will be posted at least 2 hours prior to the start
of the work day on the service learning web site and you will be sent an
email with the cancellation notice. When possible, we try our best
to notify students of the cancellation at least a day in advance via
email and post the cancellation on the web. The project will then
be held on the already scheduled rain date. Please do not call to
ask about cancellations. All information can be found on the web
and in emails. If you do not see a cancellation notice, the
project will be held as scheduled.
Guest Policy:
Service learning project work days are an extension of the classroom.
Only students registered for a service learning project may attend the
projects. Please no guests, including children.
For questions, comments or concerns please email
cees@iupui.edu.
Please no phone calls or office visits unless otherwise requested and
scheduled through email
correspondence.
If you have a disability and need accommodations, please contact us at
cees@iupui.edu. Please provide
us with at least a two week notice of the request before the schedule
service learning project.
