Biological Water Quality Monitoring
General Sampling Information
Benthic macroinvertebrates are animals that lack a backbone (invertebrate), can be seen with the naked eye (macro) and live in or on the bottom of a stream or wetland (benthos).
Macroinvertebrates can be found in many different habitats throughout the stream or wetland - riffles, runs, under rocks, in leaf packs, and/or on sticks. When sampling, it is important to record the date, the methods used and site location so that data can be compared over time and location to see if changes are happening to the health of the stream or wetland.
