1) "What I learned from the volunteer workday was an important part of being able to understand some of the concepts in class."Fall 2003 Ellenberger Park Riparian Restoration Service Learning

2) "Approximately twenty students of various geological classes set off to fulfill a requirement set upon them by their teachers…. Most students viewed this assignment as just that, an assignment. What they didn't expect to find was a living example of what they had been learning in their respective classes. They didn't intend on having fun, but most seemed to. They also didn't figure on what impact this event would have on not only the world around them, but their own lives as well. They didn't expect it, but they found it in spite of themselves."

3) "In conclusion, I have learned very much from my learning experience. I really enjoyed my day at the White River I think I learned more in one day than ever before. This learning experience has made me change the way I do some things. I have also told many others of my experience and I think it has made them think about the environment a little more. To be honest, at the beginning of the class I did not want to do the experience. I now think it should be required that students do a service learning experience. A service learning experience not only lets a student know about what is going on in the environment, but how bad some of the problems are. I think it is great that one of the primary goals of the Center for Earth and Environmental Science at IUPUI is to provide more educational opportunities for students."

4) "I chose to do the service-learning project because I have never planted anything throughout my whole life. …It was possibly one of the most meaningful things I have done in the course of my collegiate career. I not only had fun but I also learned about why and how we need to begin to help clean up the White River (and may other rivers too)!

"It really felt like I was making a "difference" as I planted a tree back into the environment…"

"Since I am an education major, I recently talked to fourth graders about this problem. They were amazed that  the river used to be white. They basically told me that we need to vacuum out the mud, clean up the garbage, stop polluting, and leave the river alone so it can be white again."

5) "This project changed my outlook on the environment. As a business student, I was more concerned with business and not the environment. I didn't feel that the government had the right to tell a business what to do or not to do in regards to the environment. I thought that people who were overly concerned with the environment were only doing so as a fad. Now, I understand the importance of saving the environment and maintaining a better balance. I was thoroughly amazed at how intricate the environment is. And how important it is to create proper legislation that will force companies to not destroy the environment. I think that laws created to maintain the level of wetlands is a major success for the people of the United States."

6) "Four months ago littering for me was a semi-common practice. When I went to Wendy's I would throw out an empty cup or wrapper. I did not practice any recycling at all. I thought that recycling was something that those "environmentalists" did. I had no idea that one person could affect the environment. On September 15, 2000 at 8:00 p.m. was the last time that ----- littered."

7) "This activity [planting trees] was a lot of fun. It felt really good to be doing something to help benefit our community and species of animals. I have never done something that felt so rewarding and it took so little time out of my day to help with this project. This was absolutely a great experience."

8) "Not only did I gain a valuable learning experience, but I also left that Saturday evening with a sense of accomplishment and a much greater appreciation for the effect that each person has on the environment."

9) "Sometimes it is difficult for student to see beyond the grade to the actual value of the information they are acquiring. Stepping out of the classroom is an excellent way to achieve this. In addition, these service-learning projects foster a sense of community among those participating. These projects also develop a sense of accountability as well."
