Background Provided by Indy Parks and Recreation Land Stewardship Woodland Restoration Project Service learning projects in the 25-acre wooded parcel of Juan Solomon Park include removing the invasive exotic plant species Bush Honeysuckle (Lonicera species), collecting native rye grass seed, as well as planted native plant species. The collected seeds will help to reintroduce plant communities native to woodlands in Marion County within this park and other Indianapolis-area parks. Trees, sedges, grasses and wildflowers have been previously installed in Juan Solomon Park for the purpose of providing a seed source. It is planned that these introductions will self-propagate, eventually filling in the natural forest plant structure which is now missing in most of the wooded lot. Invasive exotic species such as bush honeysuckle and garlic mustard are also controlled throughout the park to encourage native plant growth. The photographs below display how the land surrounding Juan Solomon park has a long history of cultural disturbance such as grazing and homesteads
