Background Information from Indy Parks and Recreation Office of Land Stewardship

The Fall Creek Greenway lies between Skiles Test Nature Park and Woollen’s Garden Nature Preserve, both Indy Park properties.  The property is bordered by Fall Creek Road to the north, Fall Creek to the south, Fall Creek Parkway to the west and Interstate 465 to the east.  An abandoned section of Fall Creek Parkway also runs through the property.

This property has been heavily impacted over the past one hundred years.  Maps as late as 1909 show Fall Creek meandering through the property.  In the1930’s the creek was channelized and Fall Creek now runs along the South boundary.  A linear pond that was once part of an oxbow of Fall Creek remains in the woods. The northern section of the property above the pond was cleared for farming long ago.

In the 1990’s this northern section was part of an environmental mitigation project for off-site development.  Part of this section was planted with native tree seedlings.  The other section was excavated to form a small wetland.

The entire site has been adversely affected by a number of non-native invasive plant species.  The wooded sections are infested with amur honeysuckle, oriental bittersweet, multiflora rose, and garlic mustard.  The reforestation area has infestations of crown vetch, Canada thistle, teasel, and birdfoot trefoil.

In 2005 construction will begin on the new section of the Fall Creek Greenway.  The new section will connect the existing greenway all the way up and through Skiles Test Nature Park.  The trail will run through the area where the service learning work day will take place.
