Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area
Restoration
The Goose Pond Wetland Reserve Program (WRP)
project is located in southwestern Indiana, in western Greene County.
This WRP site covers an area of 7,068 acres at two separate locations,
the Goose Pond, and the Beehunter Marsh. The
Goose Pond site covers an area of
approximately 5,945 acres while the Beehunter Marsh site an area of
approximately 1,123 acres.
Goose Pond is a natural
depressional area bounded by Black Creek Ditch and Brewer Ditch. These
two ditches have been leveed as part of an effort to drain the
depressional area for the production of agricultural crops. As is
typical of drained, depressional areas, the crops produced frequently
suffered damage due to inundation. The current landowner has enrolled
this area into the Natural Resource Conservation Service’s (NRCS)
Wetland Reserve Program (WRP), and along with NRCS and Ducks Unlimited (DU)
wishes to restore the site into a naturally functioning wetland.
